Here’s a statistic that’s enough to make you crazy: exercising at a moderate pace may boost your caloric intake by up to 383 calories each day. (I know. I wish I were lying but I’m not. You can read more about the study, published in The British Journal of Nutrition here).
Researchers aren’t sure why this dirty secret is true: is it because the exerciser needs to replenish reserves or is it because she feels a need to reward herself for dragging herself to the gym and making it through a kickboxing class without passing out?
Either way, there is a lesson here. Be careful not to use food as a reward for physical activity, because you have to burn 3,500 calories to lose just one, measly pound. Who wants to work out at the gym only to sabotage her own efforts by putting the pounds right back on immediately following said workout?
Chances are good that your 30-minute run at the gym burns far fewer calories than you’ll take in with a post-workout treat. Here’s what I mean: if you are a 140 pound woman who runs a 10-minute mile, you will torch 336 calories during a 30-minute run. How many calories is a fancy drink at Starbucks? An Iced White Chocolate Mocha drink at Starbucks is 450 calories.
Go get a pedicure instead.
